Blackjack is a comparing card game between a player and dealer and played with one or more French decks of 52 cards. The player is dealt an initial two card hand with the option of drawing cards to bring the total value to 21 or less without exceeding it, so that the dealer will lose by having a lesser hand than the player or by exceeding 21. Blackjack, formerly also Black Jack and Vingt-Un, is the American member of a global family of banking games known as Twenty-One, whose relatives include the British game of Pontoon and the European game, Vingt-et-Un. It is a comparing card game between one or more players and a dealer, where each player in turn competes against the dealer. Players do not compete against each other.

Bucky O'Hare is a fictional character and the hero of an eponymous comic book series as well as spin-off media including an animated TV series and various toys and video games. He was created by comic book writer Larry Hama and comic book artist Michael Golden[1] between 1977 and 1978[2] and debuted to the public in Echo of Futurepast #1 in May 1984.[3]

The storyline of Bucky O'Hare follows a parallel universe where a war is ongoing between the inept United Animals Federation and the sinister Toad Empire. The United Animals Federation is an interplanetary republic run by sapient mammals, while The Toad Empire is controlled by a vast computer system known as KOMPLEX, which has led the highly consumerist toad population to fight an expansionist campaign against the rest of the galaxy.[4][5]

Overview[edit]

Bucky O'Hare comics were first published by Continuity Comics in the mid-1980s, appearing in the comics anthology series Echo of Futurepast, with Hama writing and Michael Golden on pencils. The series was later collected into an oversized graphic novel. Hama wrote a second Bucky O'Hare arc, which was never published.[6] A UK version of the comic was published in 1992 by DC Thomson.[7]

The comic book spawned an animated TV show which ran from September 1991 to January 1992, along with a series of action figures. During that period, Konami produced two tie-in video games based on the property: an NES version and an arcade version, both released in 1992.

Characters[edit]

Bucky O'Hare and crew. Art by Michael Golden

Bucky and his crew are members of the S.P.A.C.E. organization, which stands for Sentient Protoplasm Against Colonial Encroachment.

  • Bucky O'Hare – a green hare, captain of a S.P.A.C.E. frigate named The Righteous Indignation. His crew was introduced in the comic and consists of:
  • Jenny – first mate and pilot, a female cat from the planet Aldebaran with mysterious magical and psionic powers common to the females of her species. They include telepathy, astral projection, energy blasts, and healing. Because of the Prime Directive of the Aldebaran Sisterhood, she keeps these powers secret from the other members of the crew. She shows overt romantic affections for Willy DuWitt.[8][9][10]
  • Bruce – a Betelgeusian Berserker Baboon who served as the Righteous Indignation's engineer. He vanished into another dimension when the ship's photon accelerator malfunctioned during battle.
  • Willy DuWitt – engineer, a pre-teen human genius from San Francisco who enters the Parallel Universe via a portal between the ship's photon accelerator and his own accelerator at home. He replaced Bruce, the former engineer, who was vaporized when toad plasma weapons caused a massive feedback in the ship's photon accelerator.[11][12] Later, Willy became stranded when his parents turned off the photon accelerator back in his room. Bucky and his crew decide to keep Willy a secret from the Toads.
  • Deadeye Duck – gunner, a four-armed former space pirate duck from Kanopis III. He is missing an eye, and is impatient and violent, preferring to let his four laser pistols do the talking for him. Speaks with a Scottish accent.
  • AFC Blinky – an advanced AFC ('Android' First Class). Has only one eye. Uses the phrase 'Calamity and woe!' to identify problem situations for Bucky and his crew-mates.

The members of the Toad Empire introduced in the comic are as follows:

  • KOMPLEX – the undisputed ruler of the Toad Empire. This sapient computer program was designed to run the consumerist toad culture, and it did, by conquering it and militarizing it. Its name, in toad language, is an anagram for 'Feed me'.
  • Toad Air Marshall – one of KOMPLEX's foremost commanders, with a uniform adorned with medals and a face covered in warts.
  • Toad Borg – one of KOMPLEX's elite troops, part toad, part robot.
  • Storm Toads – the indoctrinated soldiers who serve as the primary attack force for the Empire.

In the comic, Bucky and crew escape a toad attack but must rescue Jenny when she is captured by the toads. In the end, a strange, nigh-omnipotent mouse banishes the toads attacking Bucky to 'a safe place where the food is bad and taxes are high'. Willy's parents, not knowing what the photon accelerator does, deactivate it, trapping him in the Parallel Universe.

The U.S. comic only ran this one plotline; however, to coincide with the TV series in the early '90s, a UK comic reprinted the issues, then produced a further fifteen issues written by Peter Stone, and illustrated by Andre Coates and Joel Adams.

In 2007, Vanguard reprinted the original Bucky O'Hare comic and two of the UK issues in a digest size collection, similar to a manga. The book is called Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Menace and is printed in black and white. The deluxe edition was also released. Some copies of the 'deluxe' edition, however, were in fact the standard edition with a slipcover, not the signed, numbered color version that was advertised.

In other media[edit]

Cartoon series[edit]

  • Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars was a syndicated animated television network show which aired in 1991.

Other appearances[edit]

  • In Death Battle: Fox vs. Bucky (2013), Bucky O'Hare is one of the combatants and faces off against the protagonist of Nintendo's Star Fox games Fox McCloud. He loses due to Fox's superior experience as Fox chokes him and shoots his face off with a blaster.
  • In the Robot Chicken episode, 'Noidstrom Rack' (2014), Bucky O'Hare is seen requesting to land on Moonport 4–5, only to mate and crash the Righteous Indignation.

Video games[edit]

A Bucky O'Hare game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, which required Bucky to rescue each of his crew members (except Bruiser, who is not featured in the game) on a series of planets. As each character was rescued, the player gained the ability to switch between them and Bucky on the fly to deal with different problems. Immediately after regaining his entire crew, they are once again captured and imprisoned on the Toad mother ship. Bucky and Blinky, sharing the same cell, break out and must rescue the remaining members. Afterwards, you continue through the monstrous ship. The gameplay and level design very closely resemble that of Capcom's Mega Man series with elements from Konami's Contra series and character switching from Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mixed in.

An arcade game by Konami was also released which allowed up to four players to control Bucky, Jenny, Deadeye or Blinky. It is a run-n-gun game similar to the Konami arcade games Sunset Riders, Mystic Warriors, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa,[13] and Aliens. Perhaps to satisfy fans when a second season was not released, the plot of the arcade game allowed players to achieve final victory over the toads by releasing an energy called the Interplanetary Life Force contained within KOMPLEX. This last hurrah to the series also featured the original voice cast.

Konami also released a Bucky O'Harehandheld electronic game.

Toy line[edit]

In 1991, the toy company Hasbro released a line of action figures based closely on the Bucky O'Hare series. Most of the major characters were represented: Bucky O'Hare, Deadeye Duck, Willy DuWitt, Blinky, Bruiser, and Commander Dogstar were the heroes released, and Toadborg, Air Marshall, Storm Toad Trooper, and Al Negator were the villains that made it to the shelves. Two vehicles were released as well. The good guy vehicle was the Toad Croaker. The bad guy vehicle was the Toad Double Bubble.

The line was terminated before the next two series of action figures could be finished. There are several photographs available online of the unreleased figures, some completely painted with accessories, and others as unpainted prototypes. At least one photo shows the fully packaged Jenny, likely because this figure was completed in time for the first release, but was delayed to be part of the second. Several others show Pitstop Pete and Sly Leezard both as unpainted and as completed figures. Bucky in a spacesuit, Rumble Bee, Kamikaze Kamo, and Total Terror Toad are the other finished figures. The mobile configuration of the chief villain Komplex (Komplex-2-Go in the arcade game), Digger, and Tri-Bot (a minor villain from the final episode) are the other unpainted prototypes known to exist from these photos. More recently, both an unpainted prototype and a fully finalized figure of Jenny was revealed online in a review video.[14]

In 2017, Boss Fight Studios announced they would be releasing new Bucky O'Hare action figures.[15][16] These updated moulds feature multiple points of articulation and interchangeable hands and faces. The first two to be released were Bucky O'Hare and the much anticipated First Mate Jenny.Later releases included Stealth Mission Bucky, Astral Projection Jenny, Deadeye Duck, and the Storm Toad Trooper. Two promotional figures were also released; an Easter themed Bucky (moulded in chocolate themed colours) and a Corsair Canard Deadeye Duck who was packaged in a promotional steel lunch-box featuring Bucky O'Hare concept art.The line now has seen the introduction of Bruiser who is listed as a deluxe figure, and comes packaged in a window-box with Bruiser artwork and bio. Bringing a total of five figure moulds produced and nine figure variants released.Upcoming releases have revealed an Aniverse figure of Bucky and the Storm Toad; that feature vibrant colour schemes. And a new figure mould of Mimi Lafleur. There have also been promotional photos of a Stealth Mission Deadeye, but no confirmation yet that this will be an official release.

Legacy[edit]

During the 1990s, VHS tapes were released by Family Home Entertainment. Due to Sunbow Productions' lack of a US home distributor currently (it was formerly Rhino, then Sony Wonder, which has shut down), the cartoon had been stalled in releasing a Region 1 DVD, a company called Exposure Entertainment was supposed to have released the 13 episodes on DVD in North America, in Region 1 NTSC format for the first time, but the overall release was either very rare and limited, or no set had appeared at all. The same company had a similar issue with their first season release of Biker Mice from Mars. However, it did have a Region 2 PAL DVD release in the UK by Metrodome Distribution, which as of 2013 is now out of print. Hasbro has recently acquired the rights to most of their cartoon library, since the toys were produced by Hasbro, it may be possible for the series to see a DVD release in Region 1 eventually, if Hasbro did acquire the rights to the cartoon and if they can find a distributor for the show.

Comic book artist Neal Adams and Continuity created a short online 3-D cartoon of Bucky O'Hare.[17]

Bucky O'Hare featured in an episode of Death Battle, where he lost a fight against Star Fox's Fox McCloud.

In 2006, it was reported that Neal Adams was working on a Bucky O'Hare movie project.[18]

A graphic novel of 'Neal Adams presents Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Menace' was re-released in 2008 in manga format by Vanguard Press.[19]

Profile

That -other- rowdy Halfworlder. Leader of the 'Black Bunny Brigade' mercenary company, who are not only bonded and insured they even have a 5 star rating on the global network! These wild hares are easily the most violent sect to break away from Half World, and perhaps the largest. For awhile there they were doing ok on their own, but as their numbers increase something has become increasingly clear. Raising your kids on surplus warships, sucks. Unfortunately planets are expensive things, so they've been on something of a spree across the Galaxy. If it pays well enough, there isn't much they won't do to satisfy their contract. Well not birthday parties, they don't do birthday parties. The rest of it though, if you've got enough coin they're probably game.

Description:

Standing at just four foot four inches stands one of the galaxy's most fearsome mercenary commanders, Incidentally he's also freaking adorable. That jet black coat of fur, the long ears, those well groomed whiskers? Yep this is a bipedal giant bunny rabbit, and well it can be hard to look past the whole fluffy adorableness to see the threat here.
A deep purple field jacket covered with a high collar, shoulder flash decorated with the Rabbit skull and crossed blasters of the Black bunny brigade in vivid color. A neat black utility belt covered in pouches and the holsters for his trademark swoopy PRDO combat blasters, and probably snacks of something. Neat black cargo shorts sealed at the knee, and armored with raised areas of ballistic weave.
There's also the 'Chrome dome', that laser reflective helmet affixed with the bright glowing red photoreceptors over his eyes. His legs are the big obvious cybernetic enhancement, seemingly knee down replacements tipped with sharpened metal claws. A backpack combat jump thruster equipped with the antenna stubs of a commander's communication suite. Then again he has the cutest little bunny tail. Mixed messages much?

History

History1:
Subject 121E21 was one of thousands at the end of the day, another anonymous mammal grown to age expressly for the purposes of disposable labor. In the case of the E series rabbits, they had always been intended to work as essentially 'Jailers'. Keeping test subjects sedated, whilst being both easily overpowered by their masters as well as strong enough to muscle test subjects onto the operating table.
Other subjects had escaped of course, valuable test subjects no less. So security was no small matter, and to provide sufficient coverage for the entire facility? Well you needed a lot of rabbits, and they needed some basic cybernetic enhancement out of the gate to facilitate optimal team work. For years this scheme worked surprisingly well, believe it or not.
Accidents do happen of course, which is how this mess all starts. A wild test subject split a hare's skull wide open, and the resulting feedback through the neural network was enough send every networked rabbit into a frenzy. They swarmed everything that wasn't a Rabbit, and they didn't stop until the facility had been 'secured'.
Without minders to 'prune' their neural network, they began doing the unthinkable. They started asking questions, and with nobody but themselves around? Well they got on the galactic network, and started learning.
For a time they were vagabonds, serial stowaways hitching rides to anywhere but here. Blackjack was amongst them of course, and he took an early interest in watching how things worked. Across more than a dozen worlds, countless frontier colonies and a blur of transports when power spoke he listened intently. Indeed he became an eager student of sorts, trying desperately to discern how the mechanism driving it all functioned.
Power was just a word for the duality of money and violence, and if you wanted to survive you needed power. He watched as others abused his kin, how stragglers were sold as exotic pets to the wealthy or abused for simple amusement. If he and his kin were going to survive, they needed to preach the gospel of violence. So he got to work.
He killed his first man about three years after they left halfworld, a socialite hunter on a rugged frontier outpost who took him for sport. He killed the man with a length of wood gnawed into a crude spear, before taking the man's guns as his own and emptying his bank account. This first conscious act of violence was enough to earn his kin enough medical supplies, food and warm beds to sleep in.
Blackjack got his career started then, originally as a porter frontier mercenary companies. Taking half pay to get lessons in the art of warfare, and eventually he was hired on to a string of Mercenary companies as a proper soldier. He taught those amongst his kin who shared his beliefs, and soon they went into business for themselves. Their earliest work history was nothing to write home about, people weren't ready to take them seriously.
Dago 5 was a nothing mining colony out in the sticks, one of any number of small dismal rocks out on the fringes. The Black Bunny Brigade got hired on to provide security, but nobody really expected anything special. When the mine struck rich however, the miners revolted violently in a bid to take the wealth for themselves. Nobody expected the amatuer hour mercenaries to do anything, which was a mistake.
Dago 5 had been the Brigade's first contract with a proper mega-corp, Blackjack saw it for what it was. An opportunity to earn a reputation, and secure substantially better employment. So they fought, blowing every single space capable transport available to keep the ore on planet. Then they went after the miners, and that's when things got nasty. By the time corporate security arrived to take the planet, there wasn't much colony left to be honest.
More than seven thousand miners were dead, another twenty five hundred rabbits had perished and Blackjack had been seriously injured. Overnight it earned them a reputation, and a sizable bonus. He replaced the broken parts of himself with cybernetics, and went onto the next job without regrets. It set a familiar pattern for the Blackjack, leading from the front often saw him mangled during the course of operations.
He was hired to support larger more professional mercenary companies, and as always Blackjack was an eager student. He lost pieces of himself along the way of course, hell these days there isn't much Rabbit left. Flush with money and a safe space, the Bunnies set to rebuilding numbers the old fashioned way.

They had acquired something of a patchwork fleet over the years, surplus military vessels bought on the cheap to make room for their growing stockpiles of arms and ever growing families. Space travel is dangerous, and more than a few kids were lost to space faring accidents along the way. Gradually it became obvious that the situation was unsustainable, they needed to put down roots to survive in the long term.
At first Blackjack tried buying real estate, but nobody wanted the violent little mammals as neighbors. Then he tried to buy space stations, but no government wanted them taking up residence in their territory. Buying a planet in unsettled space was an expensive proposition, the infrastructure even moreso. Blackjack needed funding, and a lot of it.
So they started taking on bigger more dangerous jobs, making money sure but spending plenty just to keep themselves up to strength. Governments grew increasingly concerned over the heavily armed Black Bunny fleet, and well jobs big enough are starting to become increasingly difficult to land.

Personality

Personality:

Curious, genuine and considerate is how his kin generally describe him. Away from the necessities of his profession, you might even call him kind. He finds it difficult to feel much empathy for other species at all, which tends to make things all the simpler. He leads his people because they follow, and can't quite see the truth of it all. He was manufactured to be property after all, engineered to permit the experimentation of others for purely commercial purposes. The galaxy's commercial machinery dictates everything at the end of the day of course, and it's wheels are lubricated with bloodshed. His violence then is rarely emotionally driven, and even then almost never when he's off the clock. He's essentially a man doing what he believes is necessary for the well being of his kin, because clearly nobody else can be relied upon.

Abilities

Mechanical Rabbit:
Engineered specifically to allow for low rejection rates, Blackjack physically adapted exceptionally well to augmentation to replace his broken parts. Indeed there legitimately isn't much left that's original equipment. He can sprint up to eighty miles an hour, clear a sixty foot gap in a single leap or deliver a kick sufficient to pulverize a human rib cage. He can bench press three hundred sixty pounds, stabilize sniper rifles free hand and wrench open the most stubborn pickle jar. From an armored skeleton to mechanical organs protected with exotic materials Blackjack is also dramatically more durable than simple flesh and blood. Vitals protected from light small arms fire, and resistant to extremes in blunt force trauma. His noodle is just about the only largely stock equipment left, and even it rides in an armored field recoverable casing. Full body replacements are possible but incredibly unpleasant, expensive and may keep him out of action for extended periods of time.
Wireless:

Blackjack's exclusive neurological augmentation was implanted at birth, a small transceiver. Capable of permitting wireless direct brain to brain communication out to about sixty foot, with a bunch of Rabbits in the field this forms a distributed network. Whilst bandwidth is limited it's sufficient to permit an extraordinary degree of coordination and team work in combat, and of course this contributes greatly to their generally xenophobic point of view.

Skills

Brawler:
Whilst he received only the most basic formal training, Blackjack is no slouch with empty hands. He's an experienced, durable target capable of impressive agility. His small stature makes him awkward for taller foes, and his high degree of mechanical augmentation makes him hard to read. His stand up work features primarily acrobatic kicks capable of inflicting mortal blows on human foes, and his punches are nothing to sneer at. All the same his reach is pathetic, he lacks the mass for effective takedowns and lacks much skill for traditional martial weaponry. Seasoned fighters can usually keep him from getting close enough to be a danger even without the additional reach advantage something like a sword would provide. He's light enough that he's easily thrown to the ground, and once on the ground he's a poor wrestler who's vulnerable to locks and holds.
Guns:
Blackjack has been around the block a few times, and had ample opportunity to become familiar with an impressive diversity of military arms. With a submachine or a pistol his mechanical augmentations allow for impressive feats of accuracy and control, more than capable of pushing his weapons to the full extent of their design specification. Whilst he's quite strong, his short stature tends to make using larger more powerful arms clumsy and uncomfortable however thus limiting the depth of weapons at his disposal.
Spacer:
Having spent the majority of his adult life in transit, Blackjack has had ample opportunity to get comfortable amongst the stars. He's capable of piloting everything from fighters to capital ships, and can recognize most vessels in common circulation. He's comfortable operating in microgravity, and has a basic understanding of orbital mechanics. As a pilot he's substantially more comfortable with dropships than anything, though he's gotten seat time in everything from fighters to freighters. With a diagnostic AI and schematics at his disposal he's capable of basic repairs, though complex fabrication and diagnostics are well beyond him.
Tactician:

An expert in infantry tactics, Blackjack's reputation as a field commander is well earned. The Black Bunny Brigade easily qualifies as an exotic opponent to begin with, and Blackjack has had ample opportunity to gain experience in the field. He's dynamic and unpredictable, utilizing his rabbit to rabbit network to make lightning fast movements in real time. Even when faced with a numerically superior opponent, he's sufficiently quick to keep his foes off balance. Against partisans, rebels, terrorists and criminal elements he's quite the terror. That said he's rarely had to face actual military units who are well trained and equipped, nor is he experienced with operations with a force larger than a single brigade. His logistical strategy tends to rely on short engagements, and he's far from a fleet commander. Large scale action in general, is just not something he's terribly familiar with.

Armory:
Blackjack has access to an extensive personal armory, much of it is actually quite good stuff. All of it catering towards the particularities of his stature, of course. Soldiering equipment and other essential spacefairing gear as well of course. His personal dropship is the 'RMV Gambler's Lore', and whilst on paper it's fairly pedestrian? Well it's comfortable, it holds a lot of gear and it's more than able to zip around a solar system to satisfy Blackjack's curiosity.
Reputation:
Blackjack has a stellar reputation with the galactic mega-corps, he's a reliable and morally flexible contractor who gets the job done. He can generally rely on corporate run territories to provide safe harbors and often with a discount. He rarely runs afoul of galactic law, and pays his fines promptly when he does so leaving authorities few avenues to go after him. He's likewise a terrible foe, known out on the frontier for his willingness to use extreme violence to satisfy his clients. So when Blackjack O'hare wants an appointment with somebody it's generally granted. Folks may not be inclined to give him what he wants, but he's rarely ignored.
The Fleet:

The rabbits have collected an array of surplus military transports over the years, which houses the vast majority of their species. The entire fleet is ten large ships, a large number of dropships and a few support vessels. It provides a home base for combat operations, provides for medical care and equipment repair. The fleet is not entirely self sufficient but has enough agricultural output to keep them out of port for long periods of time. That said the fleet has only basic self defense capability, and is usually kept well away from the fighting. They have no fighter screen, or front line combat capital ships meaning proper navies or massed pirate attacks are very real threats. They can generally be relied upon to recover a busted Blackjack and get him on his feet again.

Weaknesses

Adorable:
With people who don't already know of their reputation, being cute is actually a big problem. People push rabbits around, they don't take them seriously and they dismiss threats they really shouldn't. Some places presume they're exotic pets, or some silly sort of wildlife. See that's a problem because when Blackjack goes to issue demands or make threats on behalf of a client, he's reliant on his reputation to be taken seriously. Where he isn't taken seriously, bloodshed almost always follows shortly thereafter. Unfortunately he's not known universally.
Mechanical Animal:
Blackjack's more machine than anything these days, a fine example of a top shelf combat cyborg indeed. Whilst EMP hardened, he's not -entirely- nonmagnetic. Parts can break, and they don't heal obviously. He's reliant upon spare parts, fluid changes and so fourth to keep him operational. Those same cybernetics do come off, and if detained the wise course of action will be to strap him down and unbolt his limbs. That makes escaping by himself all the more difficult.
No King:
The fleet is an anonymous representative democracy, one eager to keep Blackjack in check. Though they understand the necessity of a strict hierarchy when it comes to combat operations, they don't particularly want a king. Off the clock Blackjack can't expect any rabbit to help him satisfy personal grudges, or engage in explicitly illegal activities. If he gets arrested they'll pay for bail and legal expenses, but if he's locked down for some ultra serious crime? No way will they risk the entire colony for -1- rabbit. His support network is entirely conditional.
Villainy:
Blackjack has gotten up to some right proper mad villainy over the course of his career, and hell he's sure as hell not apologetic. He may not have any active warrants, but he's still persona non grata in more than a few places. He's been responsible for countless deaths on the frontier, and those people often got whole extended families in the core worlds who have a grudge. He can almost never expect on 'hero' types to believe what he has to say, or lift a finger to help him.
Wireless:
Whilst the RWN(Rabbit Wireless Network) is impressively encrypted, it's not invincible. You can't take control of a rabbit with it, but you can be plenty distracting. Feeding false information through the network isn't that difficult, or just tons of distracting media. With the network down, Rabbits loose their single biggest combat perk and they're certainly going to stop what they're doing and focus on shutting down the source of the disruption.
Xenophobic:

It's understandable when you're born as a discount living product really, right? Rabbits have a cybernetic link to each other, which makes dishonesty all but impossible. They've got a ton of shared trauma, and all they've got is each other really. So anyone non rabbit, is viewed with suspicion. They're all liars, thieves and savages until proven otherwise, which few have the patience or the inclination to prove. It also means anyone able to mimic a rabbit close enough, is likely to be immediately taken at face value.
